STEP ONE: CREATE YOUR ACCOUNT
Go to www.twitter.com. In the box on the right "Have an account?" fill in your name, email address and password. On the next page, check your name and email and then pick your username. This will be your Twitter handle, so be creative! It could reflect you, your classroom, your role, etc. It will then walk you through a short demo. Read carefully..the introduction is great!
Don't forget to upload a picture of yourself. The default is a picture of an egg and marks you as a newbie. Adding a picture (or graphic) makes it more fun and personable.

STEP TWO: LEARN THE LINGO
Learn the Twitter Terminology for educators through this cheat sheet!
- Remember, you can "tag" people in posts by including @ and their username. Starting a tweet with @_____ makes it a semi-private tweet.
- If you see something you like, you can retweet it to your followers!
- If you see something you want to "save," favorite the tweet!
STEP THREE: TWEET!
Send a tweet and tag Stacy, Nicole, or MEMS! (@libraryMEMS or @thePYPster or @MillbrookElemIB)
Example:
Hey @libraryMEMS & @thePYPster & @MillbrookElemIB I am tweeting!
Look through @edutopia's newsfeed and find an article that is fantastic. Then, retweet it!
Find another tweet (anywhere) and favorite the tweet!

STEP FOUR: TWEETS WITH PICTURES & HASHTAGS
Tweets that include pictures are WAY more interesting than just words. You may be limited to 140 characters, but the 1000 words a picture can provide can complete your story!
Hashtags help tag or categorize things. They also are a way to search for topics or events. Doing something cool with PYP? #ibpyp
Take a picture of yourself reading (or have someone take it) and tweet the picture of you reading your book with a comment that includes the #MEMSreads hashtag! It has been unused until now! Let's let the world know what our teachers and students (with permission) are reading!
You can also use #MEMSpyp

STEP 5: FIND PEOPLE TO FOLLOW
Twitter is not just about your followers, it's also all about who you follow! It is important to follow MEMS and WCPSS staff members so you can see what's going on in our and other schools. Sometimes it helps to find someone and look at who THEY follow! But, it's also important to follow people outside of WCPSS so you can explore the world!
Follow fellow teachers and international masters such as:
@MillbrookAU2
@Greens3rdGrade
@maherstarsgr3
@teachkauffman
@ArtyIB
@kbeller
@jameelynch
@bgraf_jr
@iamkidpresident
@TedTalks
@wcpss
@micheleborba
@sirkenrobinson
@TED_ED
@IBWorldmag
@iborganization
@UNCWorldView
Get the number of people you follow above 50! It will make your Twitter experience so much better!

STEP 6: THERE'S AN APP FOR THAT
Download the Twitter app on your smartphone and/or iPad and log into your account! It's a quick way to peruse your newsfeed when you have a spare moment. It's also an easy way to snap a picture and tweet it out. On your (brand new!!) laptop, go to the App Store program and search for TweetDeck. It's my favorite application for keeping up with Twitter. Then you have it right on your laptop! We often have TweetDeck rolling on the entry television in the media center.
